About

Kathleen So is a Houston native artist and art educator with a BFA in Printmaking Studio Art from the University of North Texas.

Philosophy of Art Educaion

Art is a vital experience for every student, regardless of their level or ability. Art gives us language for the thoughts in our head and facilitates deeper connections, creating a bridge from one person to another.
Though some students are more naturally drawn to artistic expression, every person benefits from the physical and mental act of creating regardless of skill or aptitude. The act of art-making strengthens motor and problem solving skills, helps better express ideas, and grows the maker’s empathy. Alongside art-making, the discussion of ideas through critique amplifies growth and nurtures individual expression. In spite of any final product, the act of making and sharing are truly the core of art’s importance. Anyone can make art and everyone should be given the opportunity. These truths help students more strongly develop a sense of self and a path forward in life.
These ideals are the foundation of my love of art and the driving force behind my passion for teaching. My goal is to nurture the skills, creativity, imagination, and art discourse of students, in hopes of sharing with my students the joy and connection that art brings.

Artist Statement

Using the phenomenon of afterimages as a foundation, Kathleen seeks to show a relationship between finite and infinite through physical and spiritual lenses. Like memories, an afterimage is a sign of what has been seen or what cannot be seen fully, a lingering shadow that continues beyond when we stop looking. The organic abstraction, architectural lines, and pseudo-geographical elements intend for the viewer to acknowledge the almost familiar. Her work is an attempt to give visual representation to thought that exists outside of language and the movement of time that we cannot see. Though we must function within our languages and system of time, Kathleen hopes that through her work, the viewer is reminded to look beyond what is understood and give credence to truth where it may be found.
